Vulpine Smile vs. James Bondage - AngelscrapingsVulpine Smile vs. James Bondage
Category: Experimental / Ambient / Industrial
Album: Angelscrapings
Stars: 1.5
Blurb: Mood and pretense aren’t enough to make this collaboration worth while.

The collaboration of U.S. artist Vulpine Smile and the UK’s James Bondage, the remix moniker of Vasco Pereira, Angelscrapings is the product of these two experimental artists joining together. While Vulpine Smile brings to the table a pretty strong talent for creating beat heavy IDM, it seems James Bondage brings a talent for complete audio destruction that, unfortunately, leaves one artist completely at the other’s mercy.

The opening track, “Subterranean” is a swirling bass heavy, warbled track similar to the noise effect of the brain warping video from the film The Signal, and the track is just as maddening as its formless meandering noises play out in eerie and oppressive fashion. Things calm down some with “A Leisurely Assassination,” where some minor beats and a semblance of structure makes an appearance at times, but the track more often gives the impression of multiple tracks colliding and overlapping like a poorly tuned radio. “Sintra Nocturna” once again shows an ability to create oppressive moods, but it is partially ruined by non sequitur breaks that seem totally unneeded. It starts to become apparent at the album’s midpoint that the random, disjointed feel of the tracks is more by design than by accident and that despite some significant talent in sound engineering present, it becomes more difficult to latch onto these redeeming values as the album’s entire purpose appears to be to annoy.

Angelscrapings is the sort of album that does little more than frustrate. While it seems unfair to blame the album’s failures on one artist when it is a collaborative effort, when hearing the artists’ other work, it becomes a little obvious whose talent got buried beneath the random sound, lack of structure, and desperate need to fight against convention in a forced and pretentious manner. The album tests patience rather than pushes boundaries and many will find the only rewarding thing about it will be the sense of great relief it creates when it’s over.
