Blurb: A shining new electro/rock star emerges from Chicago with a noisily powerful and diversely melodic sound.

Chicago just seems to be a breeding ground for musical talent and is essentially the birthplace of the industrial music scene in the States. Emerging from the Windy City is Violet Winter, whose self-titled debut in July of 2010 made waves in the underground music scene with the band’s trademark blending of hard electronic textures and melodic rock energy. In early 2011, front man Oscar Salinas began collaborating with Glitch Mode Squad leader Sean Payne to produce Beyond the Exosphere, a five track EP that promises to solidify Violet Winter’s status as a new force to be reckoned with. As “Exosphere” begins with a pulsating analog synth sequence and the subtle flutters of a string quartet, Salinas’ forceful yet emotive voice leads us into an explosive wall of guitars and distorted electronics. From the intensity of the vocal harmonies and the melancholy progressions of noise, the song is a surefire hit out of the park and builds the anticipation for what the band has in store for the rest of the EP. “Are You Alive” then hits with Salinas’ voice once again hitting the right balance of melodic restraint and powerful emotion, with Los Angeles hip-hop artist Olmeca providing some impressive rapping that meshes with the song’s beat-driven simplicity quite well. Throbbing analog sequences, scrapes of guitars, and tightly programmed breakbeats underscore “Miles Away” offset by the vocal interplay of distorted bluesy quality and monotonous tension, while “You Know It’s True” is a straight up lounge rocker with the live drums and strutting guitars complementing a smarmy vocal croon that oozes pure sex, drugs, and rock & roll without sounding contrived. “Something More” closes the EP out with a tribal-esque barrage of industrialized percussion as the soulful piano and vocals carry the listener over soundscapes of glitchy electronics. Amid the different styles at play in Violet Winter’s music is a consistency of tonality and melodic quality that ties every element together quite well and keeps the mélange of sound from descending into incoherence. Beyond that, the songs are downright catchy as the listener will undoubtedly find oneself humming them long after the EP has concluded. In short, Violet Winter is a remarkable new star in the electro/rock scene and will surely be accomplishing greater things in the years to come.
