Blurb: Black Snow 2 is a collection of holiday songs for the boys and girls who prefer to be on the naughty list.

It would be easy to dismiss Black Snow 2 as just another Christmas song compilation. After all, the remix thing has been done before. This isn’t even the first time industrial and electronic groups have reimagined classics such as “White Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and “Santa Baby.” Just look at the album name and you see this is the second time the Black Rain Media Group has done this. However, this compilation is very loosely related to the love thy neighbor message and classic hymns so often recycled with very little imagination. This is hardcore energy, good, evil, greed, and lust… just what the bad little kiddies really want.

Beginning with the French electronic group Jabberwock’s ode to excess and loneliness, “Fragment 25,” you immediately get the idea that this is not the typical Christmas compilation. “Santa Baby,” performed by ElectroXcentric, is just as greedy, slinky, and sexy as the Eartha Kitt original, but with some sinister electronic beats. Psyborg Corp’s “Angels We Have Heard on High” takes all the elements of EBM, heavy beat, synths, preprogrammed sound effects, and then they throw in vocals that sound like the singer is drowning in a digital river. It is an odd one. “Weisse Weihnacht (White Christmas)” never sounded more frightening than when Digital Factor decided to bark German lyrics over a playful electronic melody. And to round out the more traditional covers, Nude’s “Silent Night” is a stilted instrumental over a drum beat that sounds like it is about to jump into Queen’s “We Will Rock You.”

On the naughtier side, we have Digital Factor’s peppy dance tune “Bloody Christmas,” V2A’s addictive list of demands “Christmas Day Virus,” and a nightmare for all seasons, Cedigest’s “Antichristmas.” “Antichristmas” lives up to its name with a haunting blend of choral samples, evil lyrics, and a deep rhythm that will get your heart pounding. Leæther Strip performs “It Happened on Christmas Day,” a rousing Celtic-sounding tale of death and dismemberment, followed by Atomic Neon’s “Winter In My Heart,” a melancholy down-tempo, guitar-driven, Smiths-like ballad that could use a little less echo on the vocals. Oddly, Black Snow 2 ends with “The Impossible Dream,” not a great song in the best of circumstances. It is just strange here.

Certainly not an average collection of Christmas songs, Black Snow 2 reimagines the holiday spirit with imaginative covers of some standards and the introduction of some truly dark new songs. Naughty, nice, dark, morbid, and just twisted, this album will appeal to many a twisted soul.
