Blurb: An intense and occasionally overbearing soundtrack to an industrial dystopia.

There has always been a militaristic element to the industrial genre, from the chant-like vocals and regimented rhythms to the combat boots and military fashions adopted by the genre’s musicians and fans. German act V2A takes this undercurrent and brings it to the forefront, creating what sounds like a soundtrack to a dystopian futuristic war film.

Like many dystopian sci-fi stories, this one can be a bit overbearing in its message, particularly in the lyrics. The lyrics are, for the most part, a collection of slogans, like “Seek and destroy,” “Meat is murder,” and “Replace humanity,” or other clichés like “Fuck you, I will not obey” and “I’ll be the last man standing.”

Despite the lackluster lyrics, Machine Corps is still a fine example of industrial, using the cold electronic sounds to create their futuristic war machine. There is a song called “War Machine,” which uses a combination of light synth and hard drums, along with contrasting male and female vocals, to create a harsh and textured sound, a sound that is heard on several spots on the album. The band also experiments further within the industrial framework. “Android” has an appropriately mechanical sound with a fast drum machine and robotic vocals. “Citizen” mixes the drum machines with a more traditional techno beat. “Intruder Alert” opens with an alarm sound, which mixes flawlessly with the hard, heavy beats that come in, and the repeating chant of the title, giving the real sense that there is a dangerous intruder in their midst.

As is common in sci-fi dystopias, this one has an appropriately tragic ending in the final track, “Beyond Repair.” The soft yet piercing synth, fast sweeping rhythm, and forceful vocals give weight to the lyrics (“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, all come down to a world of dust”). The repeated wail of “What have we done,” though simple and a little clichéd, creates a palpable sense of dread and regret, and gives the album a fitting closing.
