Blurb: True Zebra has a sound that many Nine Inch Nails fans will find familiar; maybe too familiar.

Belgium’s Kevin Strauwen – a.k.a. True Zebra – doesn’t need friends to play with; he does quite well all on his own. Composing and performing all his own music and vocals, the talented performer emulates one of his idols, Trent Reznor. The only drawback is that he may do it just a little too well.

Vocally, Strauwen is not easily comparable with other singers. His style is relaxed and sometimes a little ominous. He moves easily between spoken word and creepy melodies reminiscent of Tricky, Trent Reznor, and Nivek Ogre, but not overtly similar to any of them. It’s in the music that he excels… and frustrates. With a blend of organic instruments and electronic elements, there is plenty to keep the ear entertained, until the ear begins to realize it’s heard all this somewhere before. Beginning with the very first song, “The Silence,” the music is eerily similar to late Nine Inch Nails tunes. It is interesting and catchy, but not quite original enough, almost as if late one night, Strauwen snuck into Reznor’s recording studio and swept up all the little bits and pieces of discarded compositions and made them a bit poppier. “The Silence” and “Delirious” are both very likable tunes, the most likely to be singles. However, it is the more experimental “Boy Says Nothing” that really stands out. Unlike the others, it plays more like a dark Tricky tune backed by bird songs and inspires thoughts of an exceptionally frightening stalker.

True Zebra’s self-titled album is very enjoyable and would appeal to fans of many genres of music: rock, pop, industrial, electronic. It is very unlike most of the stuff coming out of Belgium, but it would benefit from breaking away just a bit from more prominent artists.
