Blurb: An album that shows nice production and strong vocals can’t always carry simplistic structure.

Only the second full-length album from this Slovenian trio, Tonight We Dream Fiercely showcases Torul’s tight production and strong sound engineering skills. Woven into the band’s synthpop sound along with the typical yet competent vocals, Torul has a lot of potential; unfortunately though, despite its strengths, a possible need for an editing ear has led to an album of painfully simplistic structure that leaves much of it feeling formulaic and repetitive as bass heavy synth and melodic vocals try to make up for each song’s overly basic format.

The opening track, “The Sun!” is an exceptional, attention grabbing start to the album with its crisp rumbling bass and warm, powerful vocal performance. However, with “Wake Up,” Torul takes on a more somber and sedate tone, which makes the lack of complexity in its composition and reliance on an overly repetitive structure painfully apparent as the song seems to go nowhere and eventually just peters out with no real memorable chorus or any sort of defining characteristic. Then there are tracks such as “Always Embraced” that feature some nice vocal work, but the song just remains flat and never builds to any sort of climax, once again leaving it feeling like easily forgotten filler. Occasionally, Torul seems to channel some of its influences. “I’m Still Here” serves up a peppy Devo-like sound and “End of Story” carries a strong Underworld-like attitude; these tracks help the album escape its monotonous trappings and breathe much needed life into the music.

Tonight We Dream Fiercely is the strange sort of album that seems like it has all the right ingredients to be great but just fails at it. Far too many songs on the album follow the same formula, come across flat, and leave the album a droning and forgettable experience. There are absolutely flashes of brilliance to be found in tracks like “The Sun!” and there are some truly superb synth lines and sound engineering sprinkled throughout, but unfortunately, it’s just not enough.
