Teleoptyk - Playing in the DarkTeleoptyk
Category: Industrial
Album: Playing in the Dark
Stars: 3
Blurb: A surreal trip through dark landscapes that isn’t entirely memorable but worth a trip or two anyway.

Often times, instrumental EPs end up monotonous and frustrating to listen to. Fortunately, this isn’t the case with Teleoptyk and the release Playing in the Dark. The dark industrial and electronic noises blend well together and change often enough to avoid becoming tedious, keeping them fresh with slight musical changes or shifts in direction to keep you on your toes. “Occultra” menacingly stomps across your speaker with a gritty guitar and plenty of static and dark pads sounding off in the distance. Title track “Playing in the Dark” has more of an electronica feel and unleashes lasers and synths that bounce across the dark halls of the bass and harsh electronic tones that kick right into the other instruments. The oddly titled “Mayan Calendar Girls” also pushes the creep factor with its pads and tribal electronics and invokes a sense of pure dread building to an abrupt conclusion for the song. Short, sweet, and to the point is the name of the game with Playing in the Dark and because the album knows when to start, stop, and begin again, it is much more digestible than other projects of a similar nature. While the tracks aren’t the most memorable, they definitely do breathe with a life all their own and if this is any indication of where Teleoptyk is going, the direction will surely be interesting though a bit creepy all the same.
