Tapewyrm - Nightmares and Noizescapes Vol. 1Tapewyrm
Category: Industrial / Noise
Album: Nightmares and Noizescapes Vol. 1 & 2

Blurb: Despite criminally short running lengths, this act’s debut demos provide an addicting take on an established style.

A newcomer to the industrial genre, Tapewyrm is a UK based act that has been slowly making a name for itself in the production of rhythmic noise. Two years after its violent inception, Tapewyrm has produced a pair of demos that represent the fruits of its labor. On both Nightmares and Noizescapes volumes, the act manages to blend cold, unforgiving noise with aggressive yet hypnotic rhythms. The production is on the lo-fi side as well as favoring mid and bass over treble, giving Tapewyrm a firm sound like in the dark muddy corridors of Nordic industrial and, at times, Throbbing Gristle. One does find the odd sample among the dark mechanical soundscapes as listeners may double take upon hearing the strains of “Flawless Victory” or other Mortal Kombat related quotes. While these demos have their share of positives, one big glaring negative is that these aren’t for everybody. It’s not particularly accessible, but then when has the avant-garde ever been accessible? Another negative is an overarching lack of organization in this work as Tapewyrm, through the course of these demo tapes, sends you through alternating periods of abstract noise and mechanical drums. As these are demos, one can’t judge too harshly. Tapewyrm is a young artist trying to find its respective voice. While unrefined, these demos show a veritable amount of potential for full releases. With the right amount of honing and focus, it would be quite exciting to see what the act can do in future releases. That being said, Nightmares and Noizescapes is a weird beast indeed. Read no further if you’re one who expects fleshed out tracks with set song structures or even vocals. If you’re looking for PVC-clad electro/goth or the danceable strains of EBM, then read no further. If by a slim chance you are one of those fans of the noisy old school and are looking for something rhythmic and migraine inducing, then consider it time well spent.
