Skinny Puppy - Eurosolvent (Bootleg) DVDSkinny Puppy
Category: Industrial
Album: Eurosolvent (Bootleg) DVD
Stars: 4
Blurb: This fan-made bootleg – endorsed by the band and offered for free on the internet – is perhaps the most genuine and authentic presentation of Skinny Puppy in the live setting.

Skinny Puppy is arguably the most influential and revered of experimental/industrial bands, due in no small part to their legendary live performances. As garishly horrific as the music they create, Nivek Ogre and cEvin Key with their usual complement of backup musicians have for three decades presented audiences with some of the most impressively complex and theatrical displays of audiovisual stimuli. The 2010 In Solvent See tour sparked a return to the multimedia inspired nightmare of the 1992 Last Rites tour, with the set list comprised of many of the band’s best known songs. The Bootlegged, Broke, and In Solvent Seas release earlier this year was an unbridled document of the audio portion of the tour, but in the absence of a DVD companion seemed little more than an item for diehard fans. Enter the Hungarian Skinny Puppy fan club. The Eurosolvent DVD, offered free via online torrents, captures the band’s performance in Budapest’s Diesel Club, August 19, 2010, and while not an official release has been endorsed by the band as the DVD companion to the live album.

It is important to note that as a bootleg, Eurosolvent lacks the polish and high definition quality one would hope or expect from an official DVD. While this can usually result in a jarring viewing experience, it does well to provide an air of visceral authenticity; while there is a fair amount of editing and multiple camera angles (as opposed to the usual bootleg stigma of a single camera struggling to find the best view), there is no slickness to it, no mish-mashing of different shows as is so often the case with live video releases. Watching Eurosolvent, it is easy to feel a sense that this is the show as it progressed, giving the viewer the next best thing to actually being at the show. And what a show! From Justin Bennett’s percussive segues as cEvin Key’s “brap” segments resonate through the speakers, to Ogre’s gradual shedding of his surreal costume – starting as a sort of deranged mummy or a living puppet as “Love in Vein” begins to entering a glass, blood-soaked cage with only his silhouette and a malfunctioning camera in “Rodent” to finally revealing himself in faded black makeup by “Worlock” – the band is in top form with nary a misstep.

Ending with the tagline that as a free bootleg, Eurosolvent is not for sale and to support Skinny Puppy buy actually purchasing their releases, this DVD makes for not only a wonderful complement to the Bootlegged, Broke, and In Solvent Seas album, but also a grand statement by the fans on the state of music today. Downloadable via torrent and available in its entirety on YouTube, Eurosolvent stands up to any official release in terms of the quality of content if not in the production, making it a worthwhile viewing for any fan.
