Blurb: German industrialists deliver half a semi-solid album after half an album of bland throwaways.

The first half of Behind the Horizon, from German industrial duo Pyrroline, features pleasant enough electronica, but nothing that stands out from the crowd of countless other electro/industrial acts from Germany. There are some interesting sound effects like the deep bass mixed with lighter looping on “EMP Fallout,” and the odd but effective mix of industrial beats and bird and ocean sounds at the beginning of “Prophecy,” but overall, it’s the kind of music that just blends into the background.

Things pick up on the second half, beginning with “When Angels Pass Away,” which features a bright, catchy rhythm and strong vocals. “Afghanistan” is a particularly strong track, mixing light electric beats with a more traditional industrial rhythm and a moody piano interlude. It offers a very different atmosphere from the rest of the album, with all of the various sounds mixing together perfectly. But the lift in quality doesn’t last. “Cureless” and “Doomsday Clock” feature repetitive rhythms that drag halfway through, and even the best tracks, with the exception of “When Angels Pass Away,” aren’t free from the album’s weakest element.

This weak element is the vocals. Most tracks feature a heavily whispered male voice, making the lyrics unintelligible and the vocal just another sound effect. “Drown” has a more discernable female vocal, but the flat tone of her voice distracts rather than adds to the airy beat and good rhythm. The harshly whispered vocals detract from several songs, particularly “Cureless,” where the fuzzy vocals are at odds with the sound effects and ruin a decent groove, and “Tears Behind Freedom,” where the hoarse vocal ruins the strong beat and is painfully at odds with the light synth rhythm. A stronger, richer voice track would bring this background music front and center.
