Blurb: Plasmodivm breathes powerful new life into a sound and style that has seen more interesting days.

The current landscape of dark electronic music is cluttered with any number of clones, copycats, and artists so similar that only a practiced and experienced ear can really discern the difference between many of these acts. Spain’s Plasmodivm could potentially fall into this category, but there is something about their latest release, The Post-Modern Prometheus, that makes this band stand out from the crowd. Superficially, The Post-Modern Prometheus has many of the trappings of music geared to a specific club friendly niche; however, the maturity and diversity of the material evades such limitations. The composition and atmospheric nature of the tracks is of such a high caliber that, frankly, this disc wipes the floor with many of their contemporaries.

“I Have Killed a Man” evokes early Numb with its quavering and distorted vocals and steady pulses, all the while incorporating more mainstream styles and sounds to produce a track that has both underground as well as pop appeal. “Instinto Homicida” builds upon this tension with an excellent club friendly song that features whirling bass lines and synthetic melodies. “Dead Inside” exhibits a quieter and more beautiful side to the band. Featuring piano and a background layer of atmospheric effects, “Dead Inside” ranks as one of the more despondent and haunting songs to come along in some time.

While there are some rather dull moments on this release, such as “Voices,” this proves to be the exception and hardly the rule. Although The Post-Modern Prometheus makes use of many of the sounds and styles that are popular today, there seems to be no discernible formula at work and no particular sound or tempo becomes overused. Each track is wholly unique in relative terms, and the album overall covers a vast territory yet retaining an overall feel of familiarity. As one of the more original dark electronic releases of the last few years, The Post-Modern Prometheus is a must-buy for any fan of the genre.
