Bruno Laborde has been experimenting with electronic music since the mid ‘90s, previously working on his projects Axon Warfare and Neon Cage Experiment, as well as working on variety of remixes for several of acts over the years. Now, with Tympanik Audio, Laborde presents the debut album from his latest project, Normotone. Showing a keen skill for exploring a variety of sounds and styles, but maintaining a cohesive, glitchy ambient IDM flow, Inward Structures makes for an impressive debut despite its occasional weak moments.

Proving to fit in nicely with Tympanik Audio’s staple of artists right from the start, “Some Few Words” blends weighty orchestral pieces with electronic glitch sounding like a missing link between Access to Arasaka and Autoclav1.1. “Defections (Clouds Over Talinn)” doesn’t work quite as well as its predecessor, crippled a bit by overly peppy instrumentation and questionable sampling; the track just never develops into anything interesting and feels like more of a transition track. “Confessions of a Daydreamer” gets things right back on track presenting a song that channels pure classic experimental industrial with its blistering, screeching, speaker torturing synth and artistic spoken word invoking memories of some of Einstürzende Neubauten’s finest work. Acoustic guitar pieces are seamlessly entwined in the sound of songs like “Isolation is My Achievement” and “These Hearts” with the work in the latter being downright breathtaking and awe inspiring as it builds into an intense crescendo. Laborde dives into his bag of tricks once again with “Milky Skin in a Yellow Fuzzy Light” with its haunting female vocals, melancholy shoegaze inspired frills, striking asynchronous beat, and the ever present subtle IDM overtones, all of which carry over to the very Portishead-like “Frozen Leaves.” Unfortunately, sampling once again proves to be Normotone’s Achilles’ heel as an unnecessary Terminator 2 sample mars the work of “Forms and Functions,” deflating some of the good will built in the previous work.

Inward Structures is a weighty, adventurous, and bold album that never seems to run out of surprises. Though not every song is a winner, the level of creativity, polish, and intricacy that went into each track makes its faults easily forgivable. That being said, it should also be noted that this is anything but a casual, easy listening album and requires its audience’s full attention to pick up on some of the impressive but more subtle moments. This is, unfortunately, likely to hurt Normotone’s wider appeal, but those willing to sit back and give the album their undivided attention are unlikely to come away disappointed.
