Blurb: A powerhouse electronic band that takes harsh industrial dance music to futuristic new heights.

Memmaker is a Montreal-based industrial dance project that emerged from members of the rhythmic noise conglomerate Iszoloscope. Although rhythmic noise still grounds the majority of their debut release, How to Enlist in a Robot Uprising, hardcore dance music is what really takes control as the band’s newly restructured sound. The derivation of this new sound brings to mind elements of trance-infused harsh electronica. But it’s the bold and abrasive beats and obscurely in-your-face samples (in both French and English) that draw the music into the darker underground dance movement. How to Enlist in a Robot Uprising has been designed for the dance floor, but it’s the combination of progressive beats and cleverly contrived loops and samples that take the music well beyond this. There is strength in the music that gives it a face outside of the club environment. It holds its own unique identity, one that’s built largely out of futuristic electronica and emotionless robotic lyrics. There is uncertainty as to whether this is meant to reflect the album’s identity or the identity of the band themselves. This aside, the presentation of a futuristic outlook merges well with the industrial dance element, and for this they are to be commended. The introductory “Ascent” eases you slowly into their modern industrial dance component. The short-lived subtlety of sound eventually gets abruptly broken with the intensity of “Death Audio Blow Your Brains.” This second song shows itself as a defining track on the album, alluding to the robot uprising through a series of mechanical sampled vocal loops and a pounding industrial attack that won’t easily let up. Another fiercely driving song on the album, “Death Comes (Sale Traître)” is a track that elevates continuously as it unfolds layer after layer of synthesized intensity. The rhythm is abrasively pierced by megaphoned French dialogue, and all of the components are tied together with Memmaker’s newly forged broken/hitched electronic sound play. This instant club-pleaser and a large handful of equal tracks prove Memmaker’s ability to successfully structure broken beats and electronic rhythm in a way that will overcome you in a wonderfully brutal way.

Memmaker has done a very successful job in stemming outside of the electro/industrial world to include a ferociously addictive dance component with their debut. Many similar groups and artists continually strive to make this same connection, but Memmaker takes its place at the top of the list of bands that are making it happen so effectively.
