The Italian duo of Klonavenus delivers a five-song EP of the song “The Loser,” on which Saffio and Chemntiz exhibit their brand of industrial crossed with EBM. Listening to the first track on this EP, it’s easy to discern their influences as shades of Front Line Assembly and Armageddon Dildos are the first things that stick out, but traces also shine through from the likes of Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 as well; even a bit of Bauhaus in the timbre of Chemntiz’s vocals come out as well. The music and vocals work on this first track and it’s a nice mix, where even some palm muted guitars in the back of the mix add enough of a different flavor to encourage the listener to dive in a bit further and keep listening. It’s a solid start to the EP. The second track on the EP, “Endless” doesn’t stray too far from the path cut before it with the first track. Again, we hear much more of the same sounds and it is very reminiscent of Nitzer Ebb mixed with Front 242 and perhaps even a touch of And One.

The last three tracks are remixes of the title track by Dismantled, Autodafah, and Ginger Snap5. Of the three remixes, it’s really hard to pick a favorite as each brought something uniquely different to the mix yet kept something of the original. Oftentimes with this music, the vocals can get a bit long in the tooth with their lack of dynamics, but here our three remixers understand that and bring something new to each track vocally. The standout maybe Ginger Snap5’s take on the vocals, run through an effects processor and really made less robotic but more melodic. It’s tough to describe the actual sound, but it’s very cool and brings an entirely different feel to the song. Autodafah also changed the vocals around but didn’t really do anything new with the delivery of the vocals, which is excusable since they brought in a pounding ‘80s inspired synth bass line that keeps the track bopping right along with the listeners’ heads nodding in time to the rhythm. Dismantled’s remix is also well done, changing the beats a touch and adding layers of effects and some melodic keyboard parts.

All in all, this is a decent single and a great place to start to discover Klonavenus. If there had been a bit more diversity in the original tracks, a higher rating would have been a shoe in, but the single is overall a pleasing experience.
