Blurb: Germany’s Incubite unleashes a debut album not to be overlooked.

Formed only in 2009, Incubite has released a record that will likely see the band eventually become a dance floor and DJ favorite. While Toxicum may not be the most original album to be released this year, front man Neill Oblivion and company have assembled an energetic and robust collection of tunes.

Beginning with the brief introductory track “You People…,” Incubite openly and defiantly declares itself upon the dark music world. Toxicum then lets loose with the fervent “Judgement Day,” a song filled with pulsing electronic beats, guitars, and melancholic melodies. Followed by “Deafening” and the club-centric “Glowstix, Neon & Blood,” Incubite lays a solid blueprint for their overall style. Though Incubite could cite acts such as Noisuf-X or Aesthetic Perfection as peers, they never quite go all the way in indulging in their noise roots. Instead, they write and perform with a skill that allows their more palatable nature to intermingle with their caustic side. The end result is that nearly every track achieves an enjoyable balance between a cyberpunk ethos and a mainstream sensibility.

One interesting choice Incubite made with this disc is their lack of vocals. While there is a human element present, it takes the form of sound bites, samples, or a spoken word quality. Still, the usage of such snippets is largely minimal and allows the music’s energy and composition to sink in more deeply.

On the other end of the coin, many of the songs have a homogenous quality to their percussive elements, and the lack of vocals can make the record feel a bit impersonal at times. Although “Glowstix, Neon & Blood” is certainly a standout track, there is definitely room for more such signature pieces. In spite of this, Toxicum is one of the stronger albums to be released in the last year, and with enough exposure could easily become a dance club favorite. If Incubite builds upon what they’ve started, they have considerable potential to become a band many will find hard to ignore.
