Blurb: Good introduction to new album from one of contemporary industrial’s more inventive acts, slightly muddled by lackluster remixes.

With a deluxe edition of their recent self-titled album, Imperative Reaction offers an expanded version of the introductory single, and if the two featured songs are any indication, Ted Phelps and company are continuing on a promising path.

“Surface,” the lead track that spawns several remixes on this EP, has a lighter tone in its original incarnation than heard on previous Imperative Reaction recordings. It has a more traditional techno feeling and the vocals sound a little strained at first, but the beat is solid, and the lyrics – “Locked into the silence/Poisoned by the rust” – are still more personal and interesting than the average industrial act. The club edit of “What is Left to Say,” while possessing a darker sound, also has a strong beat and lyrics like “Where do you go when the cracks you hid start to show,” and the rhythm and vocals mesh better here than on “Surface.”

The remixes of “Surface” are of varying quality, from dull and drawn out as on the Rotersand Rework to the Under the Surface remix by Scandy, which despite the annoying whistle sounds that are stubbornly scattered throughout, has a deep synth groove and an airy sound in the verses that works well with the vocals. This remix would actually make a better club track than the designated club version. It’s a testament to Ted Phelps and Imperative Reaction’s talent that the song itself is solid enough to stand up against even the lackluster retoolings.
