Ignatius - Alexithymia EPIgnatius
Category: Ambient / Experimental
Album: Alexithymia EP
Stars: 2.5
Blurb: Ignatius’ Alexithymia EP sounds as if HAL-9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey produced it.

With an album filled with repetitive loops, Ignatius is mechanical and robotic. The tracks remain dormant and don’t build. There is little difference between songs; they all sound very similar, and one might forget that they are listening to the album in the first place. The album consists of four original songs plus three remixes, and the remixes are more compelling than the first half of the EP.

Out of that section of the album, the two most engaging songs are “Faalto” and “Cataplexy.” They hold more threads of melody than the other tracks on the album, despite being completely composed of technical drum loops and other electronic sounds. “Cataplexy” sounds reminiscent of Saturn’s radio transmissions that were picked up by the Cassini spacecraft in 2003. If those soundscapes were used for inspiration, Ignatius deserves kudos. The strongest song on the album is the Gasp remix of “Derp.” It has a consistent rhythm; a person might find him or herself tapping their fingers or foot to the beat. It’s one of the simpler songs on the album and fits the proverb “less is more.”

The Alexithymia EP is anticlimactic and room tone. However, it’s not a lazy attempt at music; it’s clean and well produced. It’s for a person who appreciates glitch and the artists who involve themselves in experiments of where the line between noise and music dissolve. It’s not for everyone.
