Blurb: After a two year hiatus, the solo project of Chris Corner comes back just as striking and influential as ever, offering us a refreshing but classic new album.
Chris Corner has become somewhat of a bedrock in the electro/industrial music industry, starting back in the ‘90s as a founding member of Sneaker Pimps and then forming IAMX as his solo project in 2004. But while this album is his return from a hiatus, Corner doesn’t skip a beat and does not fail to bring us another seductive yet bone chilling collection of songs. The 11 track album is the sixth studio album IAMX has released.
Each track is so uniquely brilliant that it’s troublesome to pick just a few to showcase this entire album. While there are some tracks, such as “Insomnia,” and “Look Outside” that use more of an acoustic soundscape, there are also raw and sexy tracks like “Aphrodisiac,” and “Surrender.” One song that really stands out is “Say Hello Melancholia” due to its familiar IAMX sound, only if it were taken to an entirely new level, using lyrics such as “I want you to adore me, I want you to ignore me,” reminding us that a token of IAMX is the way Corner makes his pain incredibly seductive sounding. From beginning to end, this entire album is flooding with haunting synths, his always resonating vocals, and soulful melodies.
Corner has never had a problem with forging an equal balance of dark and light in his music, making it easy to love and relate to each song, and this album is no different. Through his music, he invites you to journey through the workings of his complex mind, touching on issues such as gender identity, BDSM, addiction, and heartbreak, and it is a very profound and ethereal experience.
