Blurb: These Boston-based synthpoppers submit their analog style to a range of remixers that touch on a number of electro-pop bases.

Surely one of the most loveable bands around, Freezepop is back with this nine track EP that acts as a decent sized taster for the Imaginary Friends album. When compared to the kooky humor-filled lyrics of their early days, it’s hard to escape the feeling that Freezepop has somehow grown up. No talk of cloning human beings or celebrating funky clothing here; this is a wryly amusing yet melancholic number, as if the band has grown up and had their naïveté stolen by the real world. That’s a real shame as that was a big part of what mad the band tick, although it goes without saying, of course, that all bands need to progress, grow up almost. At least their analog synthpop style is still well in evidence on this likeable number, so it’s good to know that some things don’t change. It’s just a shame, really, that “Doppelgänger” is the only original track on here and it might be telling that the DJ Die Younger mix of the title track that seems geared towards the trendy electronica lovers is placed so early on, as if ensuring anyone doesn’t have to wade through too much other stuff to find it. Not that such a move wouldn’t be a sensible one and while the remainder are a varied enough collection, enough of them do stay close to the spirit of the Freezepop sound so that they shouldn’t prove too alienating for their fans, with Plushgun’s ‘90s edit of the title track and the Hanssen remix of “Special Effects” being foremost among them. The latter is later being taken in a different but related but different direction by Paolo Prevosto whose Simulakrum Lab Remix sounds almost like a lighter version of Tenek while the Death of the Cool remix of “Lose That Boy” similarly benefits from the nicely assertive feel that the gritty guitar riffs and harder rhythms bring before the whole shebang closes with Douchey and Nice versions of the title track, the former sounding like an attempt at grunge by someone who really doesn’t have what it takes (that it brings to mind the theme from Friends should give some idea of what we’re dealing with here) and the latter being a harmless and clean sounding version, the one that your parents would approve of.
