Blurb: Duality seems to be a subjective matter.

It’s a bold step to discuss a notion such as the “duality” of a band in one of its first releases, but FluiD seems not to mind doing so with Envisioning Abstraction: the Duality of FluiD. In fairness, there is some duality at work here; the album alternates between ambient rock and down-tempo groove. The problem is that FluiD completely limits itself through this duality. There is no true expansion in either of these areas; the ambient rock tracks sound nearly identical (“Aic” could almost blend directly into “Iron Communique”) and the down-tempo tracks are underdeveloped, dragging endlessly with minimal pattern complexity. The music of Envisioning Abstraction could possibly suffice for theme music, sitting in the background of a scene as a form of minor augmentation, but as a listening experience there is much to be desired.

Quite a handful of the tracks have shoddy mixing, such as the horribly recorded vocals of “Iron Communique” or the harsh and amateurish leveling of “Sublimation in the Zero Hour” and “Froz N II.” There are a couple of solid works; both “Disrupting the Ghost” and “The Absent Present” are smooth, heavy grooves with solid composition and engaging hooks. Two out of 10 isn’t a fantastic step, but it’s enough to show some threads of ability hidden in the tattered fabric of this collection of sound.

FluiD has tremendous steps to take before it can begin to claim any sort of duality to its nature. It’s important to hammer out one’s sound to the best of one’s ability before trying to push an “exploration” of sound.

A great album. I have been listening to it for a year now and it’s still awesome.
