Blurb: Always the consummate pervert, Erie Loch’s Exageist debut offers up a sexy blend of dubstep, industrial, and audio pornography.

Erie Loch is certainly a character of many trades; not only has he been the front man for such groups as Blownload and Gods of the Wasteland, but he’s also produced music videos for a number of high profile artists like Lords of Acid and Velvet Acid Christ. As well, Loch is a prolific remix artist for the likes of Ministry, Revolting Cocks, and Claire Voyant, and has garnered a reputation for his diverse musical style, mixing and dabbling in such genres as industrial, metal, techno, and even reggae. With Exageist, Loch’s attentions turn toward the glitch-laden squelching of dubstep, infused with the guttural growl of the guitar and as ever laced with his predilections for all things sexual. Right from the onset of “Blood Sex & Pills,” a choppy female voice commands the listener to engage in filthy decadence in a manner that reminds this writer of Lords of Acid’s “I Sit on Acid.” Throughout Semi Auto Erotic, the juxtaposition of the sexual and the satirical makes for a fair helping of warbling whimsy, from the chants of “dance, drink, fuck” set to scratchy synths and grinding guitar on “DDF” to the twinkling ambient melodies topped off by down-pitched and distorted vocals on “Exageist” to the layers of whispery voices at once erotic and menacing on the album’s title track.

The whole of Semi Auto Erotic is based very firmly in the conventions of dubstep, full of those familiar progressions of oscillating “wub-wub” bass and stop/start sequences to create a sonically schizophrenic effect. However, this is not to say that there isn’t a decent amount of melody at play, which is particularly noteworthy on “Drug Lover” and “Warfuck” as the moans of mid-coitus reverberate above some lush, occasionally eerie, but quite lovely pianos, while Loch displays his vocal abilities on “Pretty Mouth” in a manner not dissimilar to his work in Blownload. Herein lies a possible point of contention for some might be inclined to label Loch a one trick pony given the extremely sexual nature of the sum of his projects. Exageist seems to be no different, offering merely another musical style for his otherwise standard diatribes in celebration of sex. Indeed, a song like “Sympathy for the Evil” could easily be translated into a straightforward industrial/metal song for its danceable beats, pumping bass line, and aggressive guitars, making for a perfect companion to Blownload’s “Keep Sex Evil.” Some may see this as a detriment, though it does little to diminish the enjoyment of the album, solidly performed and produced by Loch with backup vocalists Adriana Onyskin and McKenzie Snow. If the combination of dubstep, industrial, and pornography isn’t enticing enough to at least attract a listen of Semi Auto Erotic, then what is?
