Dusk to Dawn - Existence EPDusk to Dawn
Category: Synthpop / Darkwave
Album: Existence EP
Stars: 3.5
Blurb: Short, mostly strong offering from veteran German synthpoppers.

After a 14-year hiatus, Dusk to Dawn returns with an all-too-brief release. As illustrated on the second track of this three track EP, they’re a little rusty. “Homecoming” is almost a good synth ballad with contemplative lyrics (“The stars, they sing to me about nothing”), and Achim Zolke’s rich vocals. There are a few good elements like a fast fuzzy synth and lighter accents, but the main rhythm can’t seem to find itself. The result is a general drone with off-kilter drums that take the listener out of the mood set by the vocals.

The other two-thirds, however, indicate that these veterans haven’t lost their touch. “Exit” offers a mellow but powerful rhythm. Unlike “Homecoming,” the different elements – a steady drum, fuzzy beats and light airy synth – create a unique and memorable mix. The opener, “Sole Survivor” is the highlight with a driving melody of a deep fuzzy guitar (something that could be used more often) and catchy if uninventive lyrics (“If I take what I see, will I have what I need”). Zolke’s vocals are Dusk to Dawn’s biggest asset; a full, deep voice that has a strong presence but never overextends into a growl. Any upcoming releases from this reunited band will be greatly anticipated.

Just found this via Google :)
Thanx for reviewing our music, much appreciated !

  2. David says:

Well, this is an EP, so why complain that it’s all-too-brief? For me, having 3 very good dark electro tracks is much better than a bunch of nasty remixes.

    • Ilker Yücel says:

I think the writer was simply making the point that these tracks are in fact very good and it’d be nice to hear more, especially after a 14 year hiatus. After all, the ReView ends with “Any upcoming releases from this reunited band will be greatly anticipated.”
      Hardly sounds like complaining. =)

  3. David says:

@ Ilker Yücel: You’re right on that. Just because the review is so good on this EP (which I really adore), I thought it was the shortness which led to “only” 3,5 stars.
