Blurb: Surprises are sparse but enjoyment is palpable on this solid, bouncing assault of heavy beats and industrial angst.

The straightforward yet powerful EBM influences that give shape to ex Project Rotten vocalist Fredrik Croona’s side project render this latest offering a predictably bouncy and aggressive affair. While Alfa Matrix certainly benefits from this injection of pure blood electro into its roster, Croona himself doesn’t advance beyond the familiar territory and his musicianship goes unchallenged by Come Out and Play’s eclectic mix of industrial pleasures.

Cynical Existence kills two birds with one weighty stone, introducing with the opening ‘” Scar On My Mind” a highly danceable fusion of dark brooding atmosphere and crisp, exhilarating electronica. This potent combo of mood and tempo serves as an infectious fodder for club audiences. The 8-bit charm of Pac-Man derived sound effects is incorporated playfully into the structure of “Deception,” marking one of several instances where the material on Come Out and Play attempts to transcend its function. Alas, this ingenuity doesn’t extend to the track’s overall tone and much of the album plays out with the same angst-ridden rigor emphasized time and again by the bellowing vocal. “Face of God,” “The Sexual Game,” and “Insecure” all fulfill their fundamental role and confidently showcase this trademark EBM formula. With strong, meticulous production keeping the momentum going, the album never pauses and even the occasional spikes in creativity are embraced amid the furious dominance of four-on-the-floor beats. The haunting, pulsating “Reign Supreme” superbly escalates the tempo but squeezed midway through the album, in between the serviceable “Pick Your Poison” and “Paradox,” it might be easy to dismiss. The unquestionable hit “I’m Broken” finds Cynical Existence aided by Greek masters PreEmptive Strike 0.1. The influence is evident and the melodic textures help establish the collaboration’s dramatic hook. This memorable, expertly realized track undoubtedly shows the capacity of Croona’s act to excel, even if the rest of the record doesn’t always follow suit.

By insisting on the all but too familiar EBM backbone of Cynical Existence’s modus operandi, Croona shoots himself in the leg. With the scope limited by the genre’s worn out tropes, Come Out and Play rarely registers beyond the dance floor oriented purpose even if it occasionally surprises the listener with indigenous but creatively challenged elements. It’s an all round solid and thoroughly entertaining release, but the promise of greater originality that looms on Cynical Existence’s horizon is yet to materialize.
