Blurb: A gothic industrial metal crossover that manages to boil all three genres down to a flavorless gruel.

The Endless Funeral marks the sophomore effort from Pennsylvania’s Coriolis, a grim and brooding mixture of industrial metal with gothic overtones. Claiming inspiration from acts such as Stabbing Westward, Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, and Circle of Dust, Coriolis does share some traits with these acts, but falls well short of them in terms of polish, style, and structure.

From the intro track, things are immediately worrisome thanks to some painfully cheesy haunted house style synths that welcome the listener to the album. From there, “Thank You” exemplifies some of biggest problems of the album with a very poor sound mix that muffles and neuters the guitar and puts far too much focus on the vocal track, exceptionally weak and lifeless drums, and nearly pointless cheesy synth frills that contribute nothing to the track. Other tracks like “The Endless Funeral” and “Weight of the World” are just very generic and unimaginative with nothing really memorable to latch onto and completely lacking in any sort of energy. Slower tracks like “Lie?” and “Everything Must Go” work much better for the group, resulting in songwriting much less rife with metal cliché, bringing to mind more of a Type O Negative style with the over dramatic vocals that may be a bit too hokey for some.

Sadly, as the tempo increases, the energy is just sapped away from the album by the attempts to be “heavy” that are really just bland and stereotypical. On top of the energy issues, the poor sound mix and uninspired and overly derivative composition makes for an overall anemic sound that completely blunts all the edge from the three genres from which it derives inspiration.
