Album: By Request
Blurb: Charlotte Sometimes seems to be filling in the gap of new releases with this short EP, showcasing only one new song, leaving many to wonder if she is utilizing her talents as strongly as she could be.
2012 brought a year of great accomplishments for singer/songwriter Jessica Charlotte Poland (adopting the name Charlotte Sometimes from the children’s book written by Penelope Farmer) as she not only made herself popular by being on The Voice, but she also released Circus Head, her third EP. Although she didn’t make it very far on The Voice, she did not let that discourage her musical career – in fact, there have a been a few things that tried stopping her musical career over time, such as developing condlyar resorption, a rare disease that causes the jaw to break apart; she has since had two surgeries and has regular medical injections to treat her jaw. One would think that if a girl is to overcome disappointments like this that her music may hold a strong, emotional base, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
By Request is a four song acoustic set, recorded live in one day at Cutting Room Studios in New York, starting with the lost-love song “Magic” and ending with the reinterpretation of her own song “Losing Sleep” from her debut album Waves and The Both of Us. There is also one cover song on this EP, a song that has been covered by nearly every young pop singer wannabe, “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People, showing us what could either be a lack of creativity or what could be her stall of motivation for Charlotte Sometimes; shortly after the release of this EP, she retired that stage name and started writing and recording music under her legal name and for a new project called LACES, although no music has yet to be released from this new project.
There is no doubt that this girl has incredible talent and some immeasurable life experiences to fuel what could be some of the most prepossessing music, but at least while working as Charlotte Sometimes, she did not take advantage of that. Her music released under this stage name, while catchy and pretty, lacked in anything to provoke a listener to press repeat. Let’s hope that LACES will showcase her incredible musical talents.
