Category: Classical / Drone
Album: Mother Nature (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Stars: 3.5
Blurb: While definitely not the most varied and stimulating trek of the seminal mastermind of sound, Ben Lukas Boysen’s latest film score still manages to stand on its own with incredibly worthwhile moments of looming terror and deep reflection.

With the unconventional methods Ben Lukas Boysen utilizes in his approach to sound design and composition, it’s difficult to deny his meticulous aural treatments contain anything less than the emotive and absorbing soundscapes he always strives for. From the experimental electronica field to commercial use and even video games, the dynamic man behind HECQ stands out with a discernible musical acumen that has even enriched independent films with the most recent being the thought-provoking picture, Mother Nature.

The intent of this soundtrack becomes apparent very early on, rarely fluctuating in its still and sullen atmospheres, perpetually brooding in suggestive existentialism. With the first half containing minimal progression yet displaying some very impressive piano structures and gripping tension, it’s not until midway through with “Leave” that an appreciable shift is found as the mood descends into an even creepier enclave of foreboding reverberations and droning textures. “Without God” elaborates on it with faint echoing screams and strange windy sounds as they slink through a grey and desolate climate before the seventh track, “Flat Tire” distinguishes the latter half of the soundtrack with disquieting tribal-esque percussion. The score aptly progresses towards its conclusion with more menacing and dramatic pounds in “Pussy” and “Mother Nature” as they trudge towards something implicative of a devastating revelation.

While mostly complacent in its droning serenity and subtle variations of melancholic modern classical composites, Boysen’s latest cinematographic foray displays some of his most mature concepts, classical prowess, and proves that he can virtually create any type of atmosphere to immerse his listeners with like no other. Whether or not one has seen the film, Mother Nature serves as an eerie, unnerving, and pacifying exploit that sees this multifaceted musician taking another noteworthy step in his highly productive career.
