Blurb: Art vs. Science’s debut EP is dazzlingly original, a perfect appetizer for the full album.

Art vs. Science is a wonderfully geeky electropop dance band from Sydney, Australia. One listen to their debut EP and it’s easy to pick up on their influences, spanning from Daft Punk, Chemical Brothers, and Talking Heads, to INXS with a bit of Beastie Boys thrown in. Fun and quirky with loads of style, these boys could easily be the next big thing. And their Magic Fountain EP is only an appetizer.

The title track, “Magic Fountain” is awesome… period. Made of unicorns and candy, it sounds like a collaboration between Daft Punk and Green Velvet, and if you watch the video (you really should), it is like an urban version of the video for Chemical Brothers’ “Do It Again.” It’s a perfect introduction to Art vs. Science. “Friend in the Field” is the most sentimental of the bunch, sounding like the farewell song for a fallen raver. “Flippers” is far from serious, unless they really are singing to sea creatures and pinball players when they command them to use their flippers to get down. Who knows? Maybe dolphins are big fans. If you know French, you may understand some of the little jokes in “Parlez Vous Francais?” If you don’t, you may just love the Euro-party-on-the-moon vibe and showgirl “Oui!”s thrown into the mix. Finally, for our pleasure, Art vs. Science presents “Hollywood,” with sci-fi sound effects, what may be an old fashioned organ, and vocals that could come straight from a ‘70s progressive rock record. Really, you can’t go wrong.

The Magic Fountain EP is brilliant. Amusing, creative, and effervescent, this is an electro-pop collection full of so much greatness that it may need a new adjective to describe it. Supernificous?
