AnaROBIK - Operator's Manual
Category: Electronica
Album: Operator’s Manual
Stars: 2
Blurb: As lifeless as its non-human vocalist, AnaROBIK’S Operator’s Manual is music of the future, poorly imagined.

There was a movie that came out in the ’80s where a computer became sentient, fell in love with the cello player upstairs, and proceeded to woo the woman by writing her a love song. This is nothing like that; AnaROBIK does not have half as much soul. With very standard electronic music and computer-created vocals, Owner’s Manual sounds pretty close to what sci-fi movies in the ’70s predicted for the future: dismal, emotionless, and inhuman.

Her name is Ana, as the voice states at the beginning of both “Communicate” and “Is It Real?.” She is not real. She has no emotions, and it shows. The robotic vocals are dull and monotonous, even when doubled and forced to harmonize. The lyrics at times are nearly incoherent, and the backing music is outdated, dull, and lacking very necessary bass. It’s difficult to tell which element is more annoying. This album could have been just as easily released 30 years ago by some forgettable new wave band with weird hair and skinny ties.

The best two songs on Operator’s Manual are “Communicate” and “My Time,” the two tracks remixed by Aquazoo Project, almost entirely because they were turned into actual dance songs. Where the originals sound musically dated, the remixes have intensified beats and more humanized vocals. In the ’70s, many TV shows and movies attempted to imagine what future music would sound like. They predicted electronic tunes would dominate, replacing real instruments with bleeps and blips, and completely eliminating the need for human singers. This album is nearly humorous in its similarity to those predictions. Now we just need to start wearing one-piece polyester jumpsuits and dancing with neon hula hoops to fully recreate the image.
