Blurb: Sexy atmospheres and ritualistic beats combine to provide an album full of club anthems ripped straight out of a mechanical wasteland.

After much success and acclaim with the first two EP releases, Amen in 2010 and Flatliner in 2012, the husband and wife duo that is ∆AIMON has released its first full-length album, the self-titled ∆AIMON. ∆AIMON is like a machine that runs on sex and ritual, making this album an excellent choice when you are deciding what to put on if you are looking for something to set the mood.

Throughout the album, there is a mix of the whispered and sung female vocals of Nancy Showers and the sung vocals of Brant Showers, which call to mind the vocal sound of :Wumpscut: or Too Dark Park era Skinny Puppy. One can already smell the incense as the album opens with “Vagtimmen,” which places the whispered vocals of Nancy alongside powerful rhythms and unsanitary drones. “Seraphim” thrusts you onto the dance floor with an upbeat rhythm and a distorted atmosphere during the verses, sung by with Brant’s signature scratchy throated voice, followed by a calm chorus with a clean(er) half speed beat and angelic vocals by Nancy. On “LOW” and “Balance,” the verses are sung by Brant, and the choruses are sung by both members to excellent effect. “Balance,” is a standout track and features a motoric rhythm that calls to mind pistons pumping or bodies thrusting. “Anima” harkens back to the sound of Skinny Puppy at its peak with interesting percussion and grimy synths juxtaposed with sweet melodies. “Amen” mixes hypnotic rhythms and buzzing synths to create a prayer that one must say behind closed doors. “Bruising” has a dramatic melody and a marching style snare and female vocals that paint a picture of a suicide mission in the midst of a storm. With “Paræsthesia,” ∆AIMON returns to the filthy drones and feedback to create a haunting atmosphere where one questions what is real. “APOSTATIC” closes the album and features buzzing mono-synths, gun samples, and the awesome atmosphere that ∆AIMON is so great at creating.

∆AIMON are masters of duality; mixing tension and release, male and female, and beauty and disgust is the band’s forte. As such, the act has a very wide appeal. Fans of Skinny Puppy, L’ame Immortelle, :Wumpscut:, and Portishead will all find much to enjoy on this album. For being the first full-length album, ∆AIMON shows tremendous talent and potential. Expect to hear this at the club, the after-party, and on the hungover ride home.
