Drone/metal band Sunn O))) has announced its upcoming album, titled Kannon, due for release on December 4 via Southern Lord Recordings, marking the band’s seventh full-length release. Consisting of three pieces of a triadic whole, Kannon marks the band’s first outing under its own name since 2009’s Monoliths & Dimensions, following collaborations in 2014 with Scott Walker on Soused and Ulver on Terrestrials. Recorded and mixed with longtime colleague and co-produced Randall Dunn at Studio Litho, Aleph and Avast! in Seattle, the album also features guest performances by Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Aborym), Steve Moore (Zombi), and Oren Ambarchi. As well, the band commissioned critical theorist Aliza Shvartz to contribute text and liner notes around the album’s topics and concepts of Kannon as an aspect of Buddha, “specifically ‘Goddess of mercy’ or ‘Perceiving the sounds (or cries) of the world,” commonly known as Guanyin Bodhisattva.
The album will be available in CD, vinyl, and digital formats, with a limited clear vinyl edition available on Black Friday, November 27.
