Ministry/Rigor Mortis Guitarist Mike Scaccia dies at age 47Mike Scaccia, guitarist for legendary metal acts Ministry and Rigor Mortis, died on December 22 at the age of 47 after collapsing onstage in Fort Worth, TX.
The Tarrant County medical examiner listed the cause of death as heart attack brought on by heart disease, though some sources cite a seizure as the cause of collapse: Scaccia had reportedly asked for the strobe lights in the club to be turned off during the performance moments before he fell.
“I just lost my lil’ brother and my best friend – the 13th Planet compound is devastated, completely in shock and shattered,” Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen wrote in a messages to fans on the band’s website. “Mikey was not only the best guitar player in the history of music, but he was a close, close, close part of our family – and I just lost a huge chunk of my heart today. Our lives are forever changed. Life without Mikey is like orange juice without pulp – kind of bland. I have no words to express what this guy meant to me, my family, my career… everything! Rest in peace my brother, my friend, my heart. Please pray for Mike Scaccia and Jenny, his wife and their children, and his family.”
The performance was reportedly the birthday celebration for Rigor Mortis singer Bruce Corbitt. Corbitt has recently announced that he is starting a fundraiser for Scaccia’s wife and children, as well as trying to organize a benefit show.
“I’ve been given the blessings to start an online Fundraiser for Mike Scaccia’s Wife Jenny and their kids. So I will be posting the link for that soon. Also, there will possibly be a Scaccia Tribute/Benefit Show put together for them to honor Mike and also raise money to help them. It could be as soon as this coming weekend. So I will also need to know what bands are interested in being part of this or if anyone can help in any way.”
Corbitt continued, “I also understand that it is Christmas time and I know Mike wouldn’t want this to ruin that for anyone. He would want us all to know he went out doing what he loved doing surrounded by everyone he loved. He would want us to block this out and enjoy our Christmas with our families and loved ones. Anyway, the online Fundraiser will be up for awhile if you aren’t able to contribute anything right away. I will also post any updates on the possible Tribute show as soon as I know anything. THANKS AGAIN for all of the support that everyone has given to Mike’s family and friends.”
Mike Scaccia was born in Babylon, New York, on July 14th, 1965, and formed thrash metal act Rigor Mortis in 1983. He was invited by Al Jourgensen to join Ministry in 1989. Scaccia has also appeared on albums by Revolting Cocks, Lard, and Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters.
