Gary Numan to receive 2016 Moog Innovation AwardPioneering electronic musician Gary Numan has been announced as the recipient of Moog Music’s 2016 Moog Innovation Award, in recognition of the artist’s continued pursuit of new sounds over the course of his 35-year-long career. “Gary Numan is a manifestation of electronic culture’s progressive nature to explore the limits of traditional sound and develop new mechanisms for expression,” states Moog Music; “We are honored to name him the recipient of the 2016 Moog Innovation Award.” Numan will be presented with the award at this year’s Moogfest, taking place on May 21 at the Moog Pop-Up Factory in Durham, NC. Past recipients of the award include the likes of Devo, Brian Eno, and Thomas Dolby. Numan is credited as an influential figure in introducing post-rock electronica to the masses, often replacing guitars with heavily effected synthesizers, and being cited as an inspiration to such modern music luminaries as Radiohead, GZA, Dave Grohl, and most famously Trent Reznor.
Numan is currently working on a new album, following up on 2013’s highly acclaimed Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) and his 2014 soundtrack to John Bergin’s animated feature From Inside; the new album is funded through PledgeMusic, currently titled New Album Experience, having attained 223% of its intended goal and a projected release date of mid-October 2016.
Additionally, pre-orders for Here in the Black – a new mini documentary and live DVD/CD box set – are available via Numan’s website; vinyl copies of the album are sold-out.
