Glam/rock icon David Bowie will be honored at an upcoming exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, presented by beloved Welsh-born Chicago punk rocker and visual artists Jon Langford and Sally Timms (Mekon). The Mekon artists will perform a sold out show on November 21st for the “Bowie Changes” cover series, which features musicians playing Bowie tunes in their own unique form. Guest lecturers include Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music, director Todd Haynes (I’m Not There, Velvet Goldmine, Mildred Pierce), and Of Montreal’s Kevin Barnes. A documentary titled David Bowie Is Happening Now, directed by Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker about the exhibition, will be screened. Other performances includes The Disappears, ONO, and the Lonesome Organist.
“David Bowie (the weird cross-dressy ancient seedling of punk) brought Newport’s wannabe football hooligans into the record stores and youth club discos,” says Langford. “I admire my parents’ fortitude back in 1972 when my bedroom walls were plastered with pictures of Newport County footballers and glam rockin’ transvestites!”
