Though far from groundbreaking, this digital experimental release still manages to be marginally interesting.
Russian experimental IDM act Psy Virus has released this free digital EP that attempts to convey a menacing and chaotic mood that unfortunately gets lost in the album's varied execution. Seeing Pink Elephants is a mixed bag of sometimes cringe-inducing and overly simplistic sound work as well as dark and well composed structures that leave the listener impressed one minute and greatly annoyed the next.
As is seemingly typical of many experimental releases, the album begins with the long and uninteresting minimal track, "Silence (There is No Police)," that is largely just seven minutes of a distorted scale with subtle unintelligible vocal samples running behind it. Thankfully, "Ghost City" is a much better done experimental track that successfully manages a foreboding and bleak soundscape that conjures images of the desolate streets of the video game Silent Hill, or perhaps of the abandoned town of Chernobyl for those less game inclined. "Isobutane" parts 1 and 2 are much more lively experimental work, but unfortunately fail to leave the same impression as "Ghost City" and feel a little too improvisational. With the final two tracks, Psy Virus goes largely more IDM and is fairly more successful in these efforts than with the previous two tracks of experimental work. Specifically, "Tranquilzers" sounds very much like and is very much on par with the early work of Aphex Twin, while "Phenotropil" continues the IDM finale, but unfortunately is a little overly simplistic and repetitive to shine like its predecessor.
Psy Virus has put together an interesting release, but it just ever so slightly fails at really making an impact. A bit of a kiddie-coaster ride of mild ups and downs, Seeking Pink Elephants is hopefully a stepping stone for greater work to come, but still does manage a couple tracks to make the experience worthwhile.
